Lump under skin above knee. What could this be?

My wife has developed a lump under her left knee. The area affected is about 2" in diameter. The lump feels like it's about 1/8" below the surface of the skin and is harder than the surrounding area.

You can view a picture of the affected knee here...

My initial thought was that this was some sort of insect bite. But there is no external indication of bite, and frankly, it has lasted longer most bites I've experienced.

It started about 2 days ago and at first felt like a bruise. The slight discoloration and hardening of the lump has occurred over the last 48 hours.

My wife just had a C-Section (our 4th child and no complications), so we watch for any abnormalities. Of course, it's Friday, and a Holiday to boot, so the doctor is out.

Any ideas?

Calcium buildup! It should be fine until she can see her Dr. Take Ibuprofen for any swelling.
Reply:Is the area red because you were pressing on it? If not look for the bite site. If the area grows larger or is hot to the touch that could be worriesome. Go with your own gut instincts and go to the ER or a Stat Care facility if necessary, medical personnel all have to work holidays so don't feel bad about going.
Reply:It could be an insect bite even though you don't see any signs of a bite. If it continues in a couple more days, I would see a physician just to be sure. And it could just be some fat tissue hardening under there... it's called a lipoma and it is nothing serious. But it never hurts to ask someone.
